Camper Well-being
Camper health, safety, and well-being is foremost in our minds at Science Camps of America.
A detailed set of policies and procedures has been put in place to assure camper and staff physical, mental, and emotional health.
Staff and Medical
- Staff are trained in First Aid, CPR, AED use, and Wilderness First Aid. The camp nurse and overseeing physician are on call while camp is in session.
- First aid kits are on-site at camp, brought along on all field trips, and available in all vehicles used to transport campers and staff.
- Science Camp is located less than one half-mile from the Ka'u Hospital Emergency Department and from the Ka'u Fire Station.
- The camper-to-counselor ratio is a maxium of 5 to 1, and annual background checks are conducted for staff.
- Camp director and counselors provide constant supervision. For campers staying for both sessions, lodging, meals, and supervision by Science Camp staff are provided for the time between sessions.

Activities and Environment
- Our team brings solid training and hands‑on experience in supporting teens, encouraging positive behavior, and resolving conflicts so campers can focus on discovery and fun.
- The camp's curriculum includes hiking across various terrains such as rain forests, deserts, cooled lava flows, and rocky terrain of varying types. All practical precautions are taken to ensure camper safety during these activities. Campers are required to wear appropriate safety attire where necessary.
- Sunscreen of at least 30 SPF and face/lip protection are recommended with products that use reef-safe, non-nano mineral-based sunscreens.
- Campers are expected to follow the camp's Code of Conduct prohibiting bullying, harassment, drugs, alcohol, weapons, and other unsafe behaviors in order to maintain a positive and inclusive environment.
